Conveyor system cost in South Africa is a stack of technical and site decisions, not a single catalogue line. Two plants can both ask for "a conveyor" and receive quotations that look unrelated because length, belt construction, drive package, steelwork, controls, installation method and access are different. This page is the factor-by-factor cornerstone: it explains what moves the quote, why suppliers cannot price a vague brief, and how to brief them so the numbers you later receive are comparable.

It does not publish prices. Market rates move with exchange, steel, rubber, labour and logistics, and a published rand figure would be wrong for most sites within months. What determines conveyor system cost

A quotation is the supplier's attempt to cover design risk, materials, fabrication, transport, site hours and warranty. Anything you leave unspecified becomes an assumption. Assumptions are where quotes diverge: one house prices a supply-only belt; another prices a designed, installed and commissioned transfer with chutes, scrapers and pull keys.

Treat cost as a chain. Geometry sets belt tension and structure. Material and capacity set width, speed and wear. Wear and environment set covers, lagging, idler seals and cleaner duty. Power and start-up set the motor, gearbox, coupling and electrics. Location sets cranage, travel, corrosion protection and permit hours. Maintenance philosophy then decides whether you buy a cheaper first installation that consumes more labour, or a heavier specification that is quieter to run.

Procurement teams that list those factors in the brief get fewer clarification emails and fewer "subject to site inspection" caveats. Engineering teams that skip them often compare quotes that are not the same job.

Conveyor length and routing

Length is the first multiplier. Centre-to-centre distance drives belt quantity, idler count, stringer or gallery steel, walkway, lighting and cable. Vertical lift and concave or convex curves add tension, take-up travel and sometimes additional pulleys. A short plant transfer and an overland stockyard conveyor are different products even if they share a belt width.

Routing matters as much as metres. Tight transfers, reverse bends, tripper cars, shuttle heads and multiple loading points add chutes, ploughs, drives and instrumentation. If the belt must snake around existing plant, suppliers will price more fabrication and more site survey time than a straight run on a greenfield pad.

State measured centres if you have them, or a sketched route with known obstacles. Note head and tail elevations, and whether the conveyor is floor mounted, elevated, or hung from existing steel. Those details change both hardware and installation method.

Belt width

Width is sized for the material stream, lump size and trough angle — not for appearance. An undersized belt runs overloaded, spills and wears edges. An oversized belt costs more in carcass, pulleys, idlers and structure than the duty needs. Width also locks in pulley face, idler frame and chute throat, so changing it later is rarely a belt-only decision.

For replacements, photograph the belt stamp and measure the actual width on the conveyor, not only the drawing. For new duties, give peak and nominal tonnes per hour, bulk density if known, and the largest lump you expect at the load point. Suppliers can then propose a width instead of guessing from a photo of the plant.

Belt type and construction

Textile multi-ply, solid-woven and steel-cord constructions sit in different cost bands because they are different products. Cover compounds for abrasion, oil, heat or fire resistance change the rubber bill and sometimes the splice method. Sidewall, cleated and pipe belts add fabrication and cleaner complexity. Package PVC or PU belts are a different market again.

Underground and certain plant rules may require fire-resistant or antistatic grades. That is a compliance cost, not an optional upgrade. Coastal and chemical plants may need covers and carcasses that tolerate moisture and contaminants. Do not assume a "standard mining belt" is the right starting point for a sugar mill, a bagging line or a wash plant.

Splice method is part of belt cost. Hot vulcanising, cold bonding and mechanical fasteners have different labour, equipment and downtime profiles. If you need on-site splicing, select vulcanising as well as belting so the quote includes the crew, not only the roll.

Capacity, speed and duty cycle

Capacity is the design throughput the conveyor must sustain, including peaks. Speed, trough fill and width trade off against each other. Faster belts can move more on a given width but increase wear, idler RPM, cleaner duty and tracking sensitivity. Intermittent packing-line duty is not the same as a continuous mine transfer that runs through the week.

Tell suppliers whether the figure you give is nameplate, typical or a future expansion target. A conveyor sized only for today's average will be expensive to upgrade later if structure and drives were never checked for the higher tension. A conveyor oversized for a future plant that never arrives wastes capital now.

Material behaviour belongs with capacity: moisture, stickiness, temperature, abrasiveness and tramp. Sticky fines change chute and cleaner cost more than they change the belt metre price. Abrasive rock changes covers, impact idlers and liners. Heat changes compounds and lagging.

Motors

Motor cost follows power, starting method, enclosure, voltage and environment. Dusty Highveld plants, washdown food areas and underground installations do not take the same frame. High ambient temperature, altitude and duty cycle affect derating. Redundancy — dual drives or a spare motor on the store rack — is a commercial choice with a clear capital impact.

Starting method is part of the motor conversation. Direct-on-line, soft start and variable speed change inrush, belt tension during start and the electrics around the drive. A long belt that must start loaded is a different engineering problem from a short plant conveyor that starts empty.

Gearboxes and conveyor drives

The gearbox is sized on torque, ratio, thermal rating and service factor — not on motor kW alone. Shaft-mounted, bevel-helical and other arrangements change footprint, guarding and maintenance access. Service factor for shock loading on a crusher discharge is not the same as a smoothly loaded grain elevator feed.

A complete conveyor drive package may include motor, gearbox, coupling, base, guards, brake and backstop. Quoting those items separately without an interface drawing is how buyers end up with a motor that does not match the gearbox input or a brake that does not fit the coupling.

Inclines, declined belts and reversible conveyors bring backstops and brakes into the cost stack. Leaving them out of the RFQ produces cheap quotes that are incomplete for a safe installation.

Pulleys and lagging

Drive, tail, bend, snub and take-up pulleys scale with belt width, tension and wrap. Shell thickness, shaft size, locking elements and bearing housings follow the duty. A lagging-only job is a fraction of a new fabricated pulley with bearings and a shaft inspection.

Lagging type — plain rubber, patterned or ceramic — is a traction and wear decision that shows up in both capital and replacement cost. Wet clay, sticky coal and high-torque drives often need a different face from a dry, well-cleaned belt. Workshop versus on-site lagging changes cranage and downtime.

Idlers and rollers

Idler cost is quantity times specification. Troughing sets, returns, impacts and training frames are not interchangeable. Diameter, bearing series, seal, shell thickness and frame style should match belt speed, load and environment. Mixing leftover rollers of different diameters creates steps that cut covers.

Impact zones, wet plants and dusty returns fail faster and need heavier or better-sealed rollers. Spacing and frame style also affect steelwork. A full stringer replacement is a different quote from a shutdown kit of twenty impact sets.

Selection detail lives on conveyor idlers and in idlers and rollers selection. For cost, the briefing error is usually "send idlers" without width, trough angle or duty.

Structure, walkways and steelwork

On many South African plant jobs, steelwork is a large share of the visible quote. Stringers, trestles, bents, galleries, hoppers and head frames follow span, wind, access and whether people walk alongside the belt. Elevated galleries with flooring, handrails and lighting cost more than a ground-line conveyor on sleepers.

Corrosion protection is a site factor. Coastal plants and wet process areas need a different coating or material choice from a dry inland transfer. Existing steel that is corroded or out of square may need repair before a new belt is worth installing — that work belongs in the brief, not as a surprise variation.

State whether structure is in scope, owner-furnished, or existing and to be reused. Photos of supports, access and rust tell suppliers more than a length alone. See conveyor structure.

Controls, instrumentation and safety devices

Pull keys, drift switches, speed sensors, blocked-chute probes and emergency stops are not optional extras on a responsible installation. They add devices, cabling, PLC or relay logic, and testing. A mechanical-only quote that omits them is cheaper on paper and incomplete in the field.

Control philosophy also changes cost: local start-stop versus sequenced plant interlocks, field isolators, and integration with an existing MCC. Food and packaging lines may add scanners or weighers; mines add more trip and lockout hardware. Say what already exists and what must be new.

Chutes, cleaners and wear items

Transfer chutes, liners, skirt rubber, belt cleaners and scrapers are often where spillage and belt damage are born. A low mechanical quote that reuses a worn chute can destroy a new belt. Include load-point geometry, drop height and whether liners or a chute redesign are in scope.

Cleaners and skirting are small line items relative to belt and structure, but they change operating cost. If carry-back is already a problem, say so. Suppliers can then price a cleaner and chute package instead of a belt that will be re-damaged.

Related rubber goods — lagging, liners, skirts — sit under rubber products and chutes. Tick those categories when they are part of the job, not only belting.

Installation and commissioning

Supply-only and supply-and-install are different commercial products. Installation includes access, cranage, scaffolding, splicing, alignment, guarding, electrical termination and commissioning. Night work, shutdown windows, confined space and hot-work permits change labour rates and crew size without changing the bill of materials.

Remote sites add travel, accommodation, stand-down weather risk and limited local cranage. Underground work adds lamp-room, cage time and restricted equipment size. A Gauteng workshop delivery and a Northern Cape mine installation should never be compared as the same number.

State who supplies cranage, power, water, waste disposal of old belt, and whether the plant will isolate the conveyor for the full window. Unstated assumptions here are a common source of variations after award.

Engineering, drawings and design responsibility

Like-for-like component replacement needs less design than a new transfer or a capacity upgrade. Engineering time covers layout, tension calculations, pulley and shaft checks, chute geometry, drawings, quality documentation and sometimes third-party review. Turnkey jobs carry that cost inside the package; component jobs may leave it with the owner.

If you need a designed solution, select turnkey conveyor projects and say whether you want concept, detailed design, or install-to-existing- drawings. Asking five component suppliers to each invent a layout in a free quote produces incomparable sketches, not a design.

Be explicit about who signs off belt rating, motor power and structural adequacy. Split responsibility is how gaps appear between the mechanical quote and the electrical quote.

Site conditions across South Africa

Site is a cost factor, not a footnote. Highveld plants deal with altitude, dry dust, UV on exposed rubber and steel, and summer electrical storms that affect instrumentation. Coastal plants — Durban, Richards Bay, Saldanha and similar — add salt-air corrosion on structure, fasteners, motor enclosures and lagging edges. Specify coating and enclosure expectations rather than hoping inland spec will last.

Underground conveyors add fire-resistant belting rules, restricted access, limited cranage, and isolation procedures that stretch labour hours. Equipment may need to fit cages or declines. Crews need site induction and medicals. Those are real costs even when the belt width looks ordinary.

Remote mines and quarries — long road hauls into the Northern Cape, Limpopo or similar — add freight, driver time, and the risk that a missing fastener or idler frame stops the job. Logistics is why city or suburb on the quote form matters. A supplier in a metro workshop and a crew already in the region will not price travel the same way.

Maintenance and lifetime cost

Capital is the invoice. Lifetime cost is energy, wear parts, clean-up labour and lost production. Cheaper covers, light idlers or omitted scrapers often reappear as belt damage and overtime. A slightly heavier specification can be the lower-cost choice on abrasive or sticky duty even when the first quote is higher.

Ask suppliers what they assume for inspection access, take-up maintenance and cleaner adjustment. A gallery without walkway savings on steel can be expensive every time someone has to service a scraper. Why suppliers need detailed specifications before quoting

Without duty data, a supplier either inflates the quote to cover risk, or underprices and qualifies every line. Neither helps procurement. Detailed specifications let them size belt, power and steel, choose a splice method, and state exclusions. That is how you later compare conveyor quotes on the same scope.

If the project is still at concept stage, say so. Order-of-magnitude pricing with listed exclusions is legitimate. Pretending a sketch is a construction issue is how disputes start.

FAQ

Why will two suppliers quote such different totals?

They are usually pricing different scopes: belt only versus installed system, different cover grades, different assumptions about cranage, or different interpretations of capacity. Align the inclusion list before you rank the numbers.

Can I get a realistic quote without drawings?

You can get a qualified estimate if you share material, length, lift, capacity and location. A firm installed price still needs enough geometry to size belt tension, structure and chutes. Photos and a dimensioned sketch close much of the gap.

Does site location change the quote even if the conveyor is identical?

Yes. Travel, freight, corrosion protection, underground access and shutdown labour all move the total. That is why the quote form asks for city or suburb.

Should I include maintenance in a capital quote?

Ask for recommended wear parts and inspection access even if you are buying capital equipment. Lifetime cost is part of the decision, and omitted scrapers or walkways show up later as operating cost.
