A turnkey conveyor project delivers a working system — design, supply, install and commission — rather than loose components for the client to integrate. In South Africa that wrap still needs explicit battery limits, brownfield constraints and permit-to-work realities before an OEM can quote honestly.

Scope can be a single transfer conveyor or a network of belts, chutes, structure, electrics and controls. Local suppliers range from OEMs with full design offices to project houses that package specialist subcontractors. Turnkey does not mean undefined scope; it means one party is responsible for performance within an agreed envelope of tonnage, availability and interfaces. Who designs foundations, who supplies the MCC and PLC code, who provides dust extraction, and who trains operators must be written down.

Greenfield sites allow a cleaner sequence: survey, design, civil, steel, mechanical, electrical, then commission. Brownfield expansions and life-expired replacements run beside live plant, often in short shutdown windows, with existing chutes, galleries and MCCs that will not move. Those jobs need a different methodology — night work, pre-assembly, temporary bypasses — and a different risk register. Buyers who only state “turnkey conveyor” without route, material and battery limits force contingency pricing.

South African mine sites typically work under permit-to-work, induction and isolation rules that govern when a contractor may cut, lift or energise. Those rules are not optional fine print: they set crew size, shift pattern and whether hot work for splicing or lagging can happen in the available window. Outline material, capacity, route length, preferred battery limits and target dates. Preliminary layouts or survey data reduce guesswork. If environmental or dust-extraction permits constrain the design, mention them early so proposals do not assume an open transfer house you cannot build.

Owner-operated mines may impose preferred vendor lists for belting, drives or PLCs inside a turnkey wrap. State those constraints up front. Smaller industrial plants often want a single local contractor who can design, fabricate and install without heavy international project overhead. Match the supplier’s project scale to yours — a mega-project OEM and a regional fabricator quote differently for the same brief, and neither is automatically wrong if the battery limits are clear.

Specifications buyers should consider

The list below is a briefing checklist, not a datasheet. Exact ratings, dimensions and standards must come from the duty, existing plant records and the supplier quotation — do not treat generic web copy as a specification.

  • Battery limits: design, supply, install, commission — and which of civil, mechanical, electrical and control are inside the wrap.
  • Greenfield versus brownfield, including shutdown duration, live adjacent plant, and whether pre-assembly off site is acceptable.
  • Material, capacity envelope, route length and any performance or availability statement the owner intends to test.
  • Interfaces: foundations and holding-down, incoming power upstream of the MCC, dust extraction, and existing PLC or SCADA.

  • Turnkey handover should include as-builts, spare lists and cause-and-effect for trips — otherwise operations inherits a black box.
  • Interface documents (chute loading, drive starting, scale signals) are maintenance tools, not only project files.
  • Defect liability is only useful if the envelope of tonnage and material was honest at award.
  • Plan first shutdowns with the installer: belt tracking, cleaner tensioning and instrumentation set-points rarely finish on commissioning day.
  • Keep owner preferred-brand lists aligned with stores so the wrap does not introduce orphan components.
  • For brownfield replacements, retain isolation and permit lessons so the next outage is not a first-time event again.

  • Exactly which disciplines are inside design-supply-install-commission, and what is excluded?
  • Is your programme written for our brownfield outage and permit-to-work rules, or for an empty site?

  • What performance envelope are you willing to test, and on which material assumptions?
  • Do you accept our preferred brands, or is the wrap priced on open selection?
  • What commissioning, training and spare-parts scope is included before you leave site?
